Best Apps for Sewing

I was going to post my beautiful new Colette Hawthorne dress this week, but the weather has not been friendly for photographing it. Instead, this week, I thought I would share with you a few of my favorite apps for sewing.

I use an iPhone, and I will try, whenever possible in the descriptions if an android version is available, or perhaps even an alternative app if the app does not cross platforms.

Many of these apps I could not do without, and a few are new to me. All of my opinions are just my own opinion. I have not been given anything in exchange for my reviews of these apps.

In no particular order…

1. The Cora App

The Cora app was the first sewing app that I discovered a few years ago. The premise is simple– organize and catalog your stash of fabric.

This app allows you to add a photo along with other pertinent info about the piece of fabric, including where you originally acquired it. Have you ever pulled out a piece of fabric and tried to remember how it ended up in your stash?

I am not a linear thinker. I am not an organized person by nature. I need tools that allow me to lasso my right side-leaning brain into submission while freeing it to be creative. This app has that potential.

It is very handy to pull this app up at the fabric store while shopping to avoid buying things I already have in my stash.

Tip from my experience: Take the time to add your interfacing, clear vinyl, quilt batting, etc. into this app and keep those supplies updated!

As of right now, Cora is only available on iOS devices. An alternative for Android might be the StashCache App.

2. Sewing Patterns

I’ve been sewing a long time. I have patterns that date back to the 60s and 70s. Needless to say, I have several places in my home where I store them as they don’t all fit in my sewing room. This app allows me to add each pattern I own to a database with photographs and details.

One field missing is the location of the pattern. What I do is use the “source” field (which is for the pattern company) and add the location there as well. For example, my Colette Hawthorne dress would look like this under the source field: “Colette – on Google Drive and printed in island fabric bin.”

This is taking some time to set up, but will be so worth it!

This app is available on both iOS and Android.

3. Dress Measurement

This is a no-frills, but very functional app that allows you to create profiles for each person you sew for and add measurements. If you are a beginner, it even tells you which measurements to take!

It syncs across devices via iCloud, and is a great way to keep all of your measurements at your fingertips.

I could not find any information on whether this is available for Android.

4. Fabric Dictionary

This is an incredible amount of information at your fingertips about fabric types, care, etc. It is exactly what it says– a dictionary of fabric and fabric terms. It has come in handy for me quite a few times as I shop for fabric and look at content labels.

The app has a search function as well as a “word of the day.”

This one is available online, for iOS devices and Android devices.
